PE

Physical Education at St John’s forms a vital and consistent part of every pupil’s physical development and overall well-being. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, we aim to deliver a wide range of inclusive and engaging PE sessions. All pupils, regardless of ability or individual barriers, are encouraged to participate fully, demonstrating enthusiasm while developing their physical competence, tactical awareness, and teamwork skills.

High-quality provision is enhanced by the expertise of subject-specific coaches, enabling us to deliver targeted sessions that support progression and excellence. This also allows the school to offer a variety of morning and after-school clubs, as well as opportunities to participate in competitive events within the local community throughout the academic year.

Our teaching is supported by excellent facilities, including a well-equipped hall for gymnastics and indoor games, and two marked playgrounds for team games and active play. The extensive range of clubs and activities provides all pupils with the opportunity to develop their skills further, compete with local schools, and realise their full physical potential.

Participation in sporting events encourages pupils to build resilience and cooperation, develop their understanding of fair play, and appreciate both success and challenge. Throughout all PE experiences, pupils are expected to demonstrate our golden rule of ‘Love one another’, showing respect, kindness, and integrity in all that they do.

The PE curriculum covers a full range of physical activities, including invasion games, gymnastics, dance, striking and fielding games, swimming, and athletics. We actively promote a healthy lifestyle through the enjoyment of physical activity, embedding the principles of fair play, teamwork, and safe practice in all lessons.

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their learning, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to class discussions. Through cross-curricular links, pupils gain a deeper understanding of how to lead a healthy, active lifestyle – both physically and mentally – as they grow and develop.
