As a parent of a child at St. John's Church of England School, I am pleased to put myself forward for election as a Parent Governor. I am passionate about ensuring that every child receives an excellent education in an environment where they can flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Professionally, I serve the Southwark Diocese Board of Education as a Secondary Faith Adviser and Chaplaincy Development Officer, supporting schools, educational leaders and chaplaincy teams across a diverse range of educational settings. My work includes strategic planning, leadership development, governance engagement, safeguarding, community partnership building and supporting schools to live out their vision and values. Through this role, I work regularly with headteachers, senior leaders, trustees and governors, giving me valuable insight into both the opportunities and challenges facing schools today.
I have extensive experience working with children and young people from a wide range of backgrounds. Previously, as a Church of England school Deputy Headteacher, and now as an adviser to schools, I have been committed to promoting inclusion, equality, belonging and aspiration for all young people. I believe every child should feel valued, supported and empowered to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Alongside my professional role, I am one of the pastors in my church, where I primarily support the discipleship and spiritual formation of young adults. I have also served in a variety of voluntary, charitable and church leadership positions, contributing to strategic planning, programme development, governance, leadership oversight and community engagement. These experiences have helped me develop the ability to listen carefully, analyse information, build consensus and contribute thoughtfully to strategic decision-making.
I am particularly interested in supporting the governing body as it continues to strengthen the school's Christian vision and ethos while maintaining high standards of educational achievement and pupil wellbeing. I understand that the role of governor is strategic rather than operational and requires both support and appropriate challenge to ensure the best possible outcomes for children.
As both a parent and an education professional, I would bring a balanced perspective to the governing body. I value the importance of parental voice and would seek to represent the interests of all families within the school community. I am committed to working collaboratively, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and helping to foster a culture of trust, accountability and continuous improvement.
St. John's has a strong reputation for providing a caring, ambitious and values-led education for its pupils. It would be a privilege to contribute to the school's continued success as a Parent Governor. I have the commitment, experience and enthusiasm required for the role and would welcome the opportunity to serve the school community in this way.

As a parent of children currently attending St. John’s, I care deeply about the environment in which our children learn, grow, and build character. I am putting forward my application for the role of Parent Governor to serve as a committed, proactive partner to the Governing Body and the school leadership team, ensuring we continually enhance educational excellence and well-being for every child at St. John’s.
Professionally, I serve as an Associate Director of Project Management within the Pharmaceutical Industry, leading complex global initiatives, multi-million-pound program budgets, and diverse cross-functional teams in high-governance, highly regulated environments. This background directly equips me to deliver on the three core statutory functions of the Governing Body while championing the vital "parent voice. In addition, I have been a parent governor in my children's previous school before my son moved across to St Johns in Year 3 and was involved in the Ofsted from a Parent Governor perspective. I also served as the Finance Link for the Governing Body.
Alignment with the Core Functions of the Governing Body
In pharmaceutical project management, my primary responsibility is translating overarching corporate and scientific strategy into concrete, long-term roadmaps. I regularly align diverse clinical, regulatory, and operational stakeholder groups behind a shared vision, setting measurable milestones while mitigating strategic risks. At St. John’s, I will apply this structured strategic discipline to help define and preserve the school’s long-term vision, ensuring that our core values, academic standards, and pastoral ethos remain sharp, resilient, and forward-looking.
Effective governance requires acting as an informed, supportive "critical friend." Throughout my career, I have overseen large, complex project teams and external partners, establishing robust key performance indicators (KPIs), analysing progress data, and maintaining objective oversight. I understand how to constructively challenge leadership, interpret performance trends, and evaluate delivery while maintaining a collaborative, trusting relationship. I will bring this balanced approach to reviewing pupil attainment data, assessing educational performance against national benchmarks, and supporting the Head Teacher in robust performance management and staff development.
Managing complex clinical development programs involves rigorous fiscal responsibility, including tracking capital allocation, negotiating vendor agreements, and auditing deliverables to ensure maximum return on investment. With schools operating under ever-tighter financial constraints, prudent stewardship of public funds is paramount. I will bring rigorous commercial acumen and budgetary discipline to the Governing Body, scrutinizing financial reports and ensuring that every pound spent directly enriches the pupils’ classroom experience and school infrastructure.
Commitment to Equalities, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)
Operating in global drug development across multicultural, international teams has reinforced my belief that organizations only achieve their best when diverse perspectives are actively welcomed, valued, and integrated. At St. John’s, where families and children come from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds, equality and inclusion must be woven into every strategic choice.
I am committed to supporting the Governing Body in scrutinizing policies through an EDI lens—ensuring that every pupil, regardless of background or learning need, has equitable access to resources, opportunities, and encouragement to flourish.
The Parent Voice and Governance Commitment
While I bring extensive corporate governance and project leadership capabilities, my primary motivation is rooted in being an active, approachable parent at the school gate. I understand the everyday joys, aspirations, and challenges experienced by our school families. If elected, I will champion an authentic, balanced parent perspective to inform the Governing Body’s discussions, acting as a collaborative conduit between parents and school leadership.
I hold a strong respect for the dedication demonstrated by the St. John’s governing team and fully understand the expectations of the post. I am completely committed to attending all scheduled meetings, actively contributing to committees, participating in ongoing governor training, and fulfilling all statutory requirements, including the enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. It would be a genuine privilege to contribute my professional skills and parental commitment to the continued success and community of St. John’s School.
Kind regards,
Bright
