Starting School

Starting school is an exciting milestone for every child. We know that the move into Reception can feel like a big step, and we want to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible for you and your child.

To support you in preparing for this new chapter, we recommend exploring the Starting Reception resources, which have been created to help families feel confident and informed.

Helpful resources for families:

Starting Reception is a free, practical online resource designed especially for parents and carers. It offers simple activities, clear guidance and helpful advice on the key skills and routines that help children feel confident and ready for their first day at school.

Being able to use the toilet independently and having healthy daily routines, such as brushing your teeth, are important parts of getting ready for school. These guides provide straightforward tips to help you support your child in building these essential skills.

Best Start in Life - Preparing for School

As your child gets ready to start school, we know this can be an exciting and important time for your family. As part of the Government’s Early Years strategy, the Best Start in Life campaign brings together trusted advice to help parents understand how everyday moments support children’s development and build the skills they need for school.

Preparing for School - A New National Campaign

A new strand of the campaign, Preparing for School, has now launched to support families whose children will be starting school this September. The key message is simple: being ready for school is about developing everyday skills and confidence, not just having the right uniform.

Steps for School Song

At the heart of the campaign is the Steps for School song – a fun music video featuring a rap by award‑winning teacher‑turned‑rapper MC Grammar. The video highlights small, practical things you can do with your child to help them build independence and feel ready for their first day.
