MFL

At St. John’s C of E Primary, our MFL curriculum is designed to develop a love of languages and language learning. We aim to foster a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages and an appreciation for different cultures. Through teaching the four key areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing we aim to build a firm foundation of language-learning skills which our pupils will then be able to apply to other languages in different contexts. Our teaching involves using engaging activities, songs, rhymes, games, and stories to make language learning enjoyable and memorable.

We deliver our language education in partnership with Primary Languages Network. Their specialist-led approach, including native speaker video teaching, ensures our pupils experience engaging, progressive language learning from Year 3 to Year 6. Across the key stage, children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around stimulating, age-appropriate topics and themes. As children progress, there are planned opportunities for the children to revisit key grammatical structures, vocabulary and phonic knowledge in order to consolidate skills.  With structured planning and a focus on confidence and continuity, this programme prepares our children for future language success in secondary school and beyond.

Within our loving, Christian community, we strive to enable our children to flourish academically and personally, becoming confident, well-rounded individuals and lifelong learners.  Our MFL curriculum contributes to this by broadening horizons, developing an understanding of other cultures, and preparing pupils for the opportunities and challenges of an interconnected, multicultural world.
