Art
At St John’s C of E Primary School, we believe that every child is an artist with the potential to create, imagine, and express themselves. Rooted in our school vision, our Art and Design curriculum, encourages children to love art by developing curiosity, appreciation and enjoyment of creativity; to learn through progressive skill building and reflection; and to flourish as confident, expressive individuals who value their own artistic voice.
Throughout their artistic journey, children are inspired by a diverse range of artists from different times, places and cultures. Through this rich and varied programme, children are supported to grow as individual artists while learning to appreciate the cultural, historical, and expressive power of art.
Delivered through the Kapow Primary scheme, our Art and Design lessons are carefully crafted to inspire creativity, nurture confidence, and foster a growth mindset from the EYFS through to Year 6. In the EYFS, children begin their artistic journey by exploring colour, texture, shape, and form through play and experimentation. As they progress through the school, their skills and understanding are built progressively, with each year building on prior knowledge and enabling children to refine techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printing.
By fostering creativity, confidence, and resilience, we aim for children to love art for its joy and self-expression, learn through exploration and experimentation, and flourish as confident, creative individuals who, guided by our Christian values, appreciate the beauty of God’s world and the gifts He has given them to express and celebrate. Ultimately, our goal is for every child to leave St John’s with a lifelong love of art, a strong foundation of creative and technical skills, and the confidence to flourish as thoughtful, expressive individuals.
