D&T

At St John’s C of E Primary, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum inspires children to think creatively, solve real problems, and develop practical skills that prepare them for an ever-changing world. We want our pupils to become imaginative, resourceful, and resilient learners who design, make, and evaluate products that have purpose and meaning in everyday life.

From the very start of their journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children start to develop key skills through creative building opportunities that encourage exploration, curiosity, and problem-solving. As they progress through school, they learn to combine imagination with technical knowledge in a range of projects involving materials, mechanisms, structures, electronics, and food technology. Within each topic, pupils engage fully in the design process, developing creativity, critical thinking, and a reflective approach to improving their work in response to others’ needs.

Rooted in our Christian vision and values, our DT curriculum encourages pupils to act with compassion, respect, and responsibility, reflecting our belief in caring for God’s creation and using our talents to serve others. Through our vision of Love, Learn, and Flourishchildren are supported to love their learning, develop new skills and knowledge, and flourish as creative and thoughtful designers. Sustainability is woven throughout our teaching, as children learn to make thoughtful choices about materials, processes, and the impact of design on the environment.

By the end of their school journey, pupils are confident, reflective problem-solvers, able to design and create purposeful, high-quality products. They understand the principles of nutrition and sustainability and recognise the importance of design and technology in shaping a better world. Our aim is for every child to leave St John’s C of E Primary as a creative, responsible designer who uses their skills to make a positive difference to others and to God’s world.
